Kevin's Gravitational Tattoo

I love word tattoos so I couldn't help but stop Kevin at Barnes & Noble earlier this month. He had this tattoo inked on his inner right forearm:



He explained that he enrolled in school not knowing for sure what he wanted to do. He was on a path for a career in finance, but also has a keen interest in art and graphic design.

He says that the tattoo is a reminder that, although gravity is all around us, and pulling us toward the status quo, he should stay true to himself and never give up his interest in art.

He had this done by Betty Rose at Red Rocket Tattoo in Manhattan. Work from Red Rocket has appeared previously on Tattoosday here.

Kristen's Puzzle Piece

When I stopped Kristen at our local grocery store, I did so to ask her about her sleeve, which was coming along nicely.

Kristen recognized the name of the blog and informed me that she was familiar with us here at Tattoosday, because her sister Lauren, and her friend Amanda, have already appeared on the site (click their names to see their work).

So it didn't take much persuading to have Kristin share some of her work and we went with this small piece on her inner right wrist:


Kristen teaches kids with autism and the puzzle piece is a symbol used to raise autism awareness. Autism Speaks is one organization that raises money to fund autism research that uses the symbol prominently in its literature.
The puzzle piece filled with all the other puzzle pieces is a tribute to all the kids that Kristen has had the pleasure to work with. She added the letter "B" to represent one student named Brian, with whom she has worked for six years. She says he has changed her life through the value of the experience of her teaching him.

As a child of educators, I admire the work that most teachers do, but am in awe of those who commit their lives to helping teach kids with special needs. It's an honor to have Kristen and her tattoo on the site.

Tattoos I Know: Anna's Culinary Ink

Several months ago, one of my co-workers, Anna, wanted to commemorate the completion of her externship from culinary school.

It was funny, because at the time, she didn't realize I wrote Tattoosday and then discovered the site through googling. She stumbled upon this post that featured a chef's knife.

Anna liked the idea of using a knife, but wanted a whisk too. She spotted this piece and met with Vinny Romanelli at Red Rocket Tattoo in Manhattan, giving him the several source images she had found and explaining what she wanted.

He designed this for her and then completed the tattoo for her in about twenty minutes. She had him stick with black and gray and wanted him to emphasize the shading. This is the end result, positioned just above her ankle:

Bill's Ink Honors Generations Past and Future

I met Bill in mid-September on the 34th Street train platform while waiting for a downtown A train.

You may have heard of the scent known as a "new car smell". Bill had whatis known as a "new tattoo sheen," which occurs when one anoints a fresh tattoo with a healing ointment used to protect the ink.


The tattoo depicts himself, seen from the back, standing in reverence at the graves of his grandfather "Giff" and his uncle Giff Jr.


It's a nice way to memorialize his family. This was inked by Aaron at Red Rocket Tattoo East, in Levittown on Long Island.

Bill has a great tattoo on his outer right forearm, as well. Whereas his left arm is a memorial to those in his family that passed before him, his other piece pays tribute to a newer generation:


In this piece, two traditional swallows hold aloft a banner bearing the name of his daughter, Allana.

This tattoo, his first, was done by Greg Fly at The Tattoo Shop on Rte 112 in Medford, L.I.

Delissa Reveals a Little Bit of Monaco on Seventh Avenue

When I stopped Delissa on Seventh Avenue, she was on her way to Red Rocket Tattoo, for another session with Adam, who was working with her on this amazing half-sleeve piece:


This is one of those tattoos that, although not finished, was a joy to capture because the majority of it was done, and seeing it after a few more sessions will be fascinating.


Delissa is a big fan of the Art Nouveau style and this is based on Alphonse Mucha's 1897 lithograph "Monaco, Monte-Carlo":


Regular readers may recall that a Mucha-based tattoo appeared earlier in the summer, here.
